My name is Jenny Feerey and I am training to be teacher. Part of my course required me to experience education in a special ed. setting. I was placed in Mr. Heery’s class, called Secondary Red.

Before entering the school, I had really no experience of working with children with additional needs. Therefore, I was very nervous about how I would perform in the school.

In college I learned a lot about Autism, Down Syndrome, and lots of other additional needs, however, this theoretical learning did not really inform me of the day-to-day realities of working with those students.

These 3 weeks in St. Brigid’s have been extremely enjoyable and very informative. It has helped me shed a new light on teaching and learning. I felt really welcomed by all and have built strong friendship relations with the pupils.

I was assigned to a boy who had little language and was very impulsive. Throughout my 3 weeks, I found it very interesting to see the amazing work the SNA’s, Anita and Trish, do in order to keep this boy on task. I learned how important it is to work towards a goal, and particularly a movement break.

I think special schools are a highly important part of educational provision. I feel as though many of these students may not be catered for as much in mainstream school. I think the broad and varied curriculum, small class sizes, and personal approach have a highly positive impact on all students, both in their learning and also on their happiness in school.

I would like to thank St. Brigid’s School, the teachers and staff, and most importantly, the pupils of Secondary Red for making this a most memorable experience, and in turn, making me strive in order to become a special ed. teacher.
